The digital world surrounds us in our everyday lives, affecting everything from how we interact with our colleagues and friends, to how we accomplish work projects and our individual endeavors. Technology is constantly evolving, and it is our goal at the Getty to be a leader in the effort to bring museums, art historical research centers, and conservation science laboratories into this digital age. In this issue’s cover story, you will read about the challenges the arts and humanities community faces in embracing new technology and how the Getty is in a unique position to lay the foundation for the inevitable digital future. Later in the issue, Museum Catalogues Enter the Digital Age explains a Foundation-led initiative to map out the path to online scholarly catalogues.

In October, the Getty Conservation Institute celebrated the completion of a decades-long project conserving the David Alfaro Siquieros mural Amèrica Tropical—which was whitewashed shortly after it was unveiled due to its political nature—and now is on view to the public for the first time in almost eighty years. You will also find an article on the Research Institute’s latest findings relating to the art history of Latin America. Rounding out the issue is a look at the Museum’s special exhibition, Florence at the Dawn of the Renaissance, and the latest titles available from Getty Publications—including our new app The J. Paul Getty Museum Highlights of the Collection.

I hope you have an opportunity to visit us soon—either in our galleries or within our digital world from our website, Facebook, and Twitter, to our YouTube channel. There’s always something new happening at the Getty.

James Cuno
President and CEO, the J. Paul Getty Trust
